Hi evry one. Here's another little story of mine. This one's much happier. It's a little story I wrote about life at Ano Nuevo state park. Hope you enjoy it.
Life at Ano Nuevo
The sun rises slowly on a cold December day at Ano Nuevo. The stars slowly fade away, as they are replaced by a light pink from the sun rise. The ocean waves lap gently against the cool sand, as early morning birds awaken and start to search for food. A gentle breeze disturbs the plants growing on the doons, and lifts a few grains of sand in to the air. As the sun rises higher in to the velvet blue sky, a drum like call erupts from somewhere near by.
As the caller comes closer, we see a sandy colored form, blurred by the sudden fog that’s enveloped it. As the form takes shape, we see a large male elephant seal, his eyes bulging with anger. We watch as he worms his way up the Doon towards a distant cluster of seals. Before they can scatter, he rushes forward and knocks a nearby bull to the ground. As he pulls himself up from the ground, we see blood on his neck. Another battle has begun for love.
We watch as the two bulls slash and tare at each other. Neither cares about the other. All they care about is fighting for the right to mate with the females. Eventually after they ram, but, slash, and tare each other up a little bit, one backs down and walks away. The winner gets to claim 50 or so females that will be arriving soon to give birth to their pups.
As the males battle, hundreds of pregnant females come on shore to give birth. Evry day new life is born. As the female lays stretched out on the sand, a new bundle of life appears. A 65 pound black furry pup comes squirming in to the world. Almost instantly mother and pup begin to vocalize. The mother learns her pup’s sound, while the pup learns it’s mother’s.
For the next 28 days, the pup nurses on it’s mother’s rich milk, while the mother eats nothing and looses weight. This is why she must leave her pup after the 28 days, so she can go back out to sea and regain her strength.
When the time comes for mom to leave, the pup isn’t very happy. If he doesn’t stop following mom down to the water, she will turn around and bite him until he leaves her alone. To make matters worse for the female, when she gets down to the water chances are that males will be there to try and mate with her. After she avoids the males, she swims off in to the ocean, and her pup will never see her again.
After the females have left, the pups now ccalled wieners, must learn how to swim. To learn to like water, the pups will play around in the small tide pools near the shore. For the young males, this is an exhalent time for them to practice to fight, so they are ready when the time comes. The day finally comes when the youngsters must take the plunge. Most of the wieners slide in to the sea, to head to their feeding grounds for the first time. Next year they will return, and the cycle of life will start all over again.
